2 Women on 2 Acres

The Good Life

Us

Someone, recently suggested, that I should tell all the 2 Women visitors, all about, the 2 Women on this piece of paradise, so here goes…

It all started 4 years ago, we were living in Devonport in New Zealand and our ‘family’ of animals, had recently increased to 3 dogs, 1 rabbit and 2 cats and there was not much room left in our two bedroom unit!!

We had troubles with the residents and their ‘dislike’ of dogs, and had found out, that while, we were out during the day, an elderly neighbour had been hitting our railing with his walking stick and terrorizing our dogs, who are from the SPCA and this kind of behaviour was extremely traumatic for them.

No wonder they were stressed and so were we. Something HAD to give.

We had a small but cosy motor-home and we were off each weekend to the beach or somewhere taking pictures, and with our ‘extending’ family it was getting a bit squashed.

The First Ideas of A New Life

Raglan was our favorite place and the next weekend we decided to go to Raglan and see if we could rent a more suitable house with a more relaxed lifestyle.

I don’t know if this happens all over the world, but, here in New Zealand, people are NOT really dog people. I was used to London, where your dog would be able to go almost everywhere with you. Not so here.

Every camp site turned us away, as they didn’t allow dogs. Tired and at our wits end, we found a beach car park and settled in for the night. This was however, against council regulations, but we really did not have any other choice and we thought we would get up early and pretend we had just parked up to walk the dogs.

The next morning, we were caught out, we over slept and the warden came banging on our door!! As it turned out, he was a star, he gave us a nod and a wink and told us a ‘secret’ location for our next few nights.

Phew!! With that piece of information, we breathed a huge sigh of relief, we walked and fed the dogs, then we went into town to house hunt. We found, not many rental houses allowed dogs and the ones that did, were unsuitable.

Fate Lends A Hand

A tad deflated, we turned to leave the estate agents and low and behold, an advertisement saying ‘Affordable Country Living’ caught my eye, on investigation it seemed within our ‘price range’.

I have to say right here, we were NOT looking to buy a property, so we didn’t really have a ‘price range’ but, it gave us and idea. What if we could buy a piece of land, far away from it all??

We took the house details and went and brought a local paper, to consider our options. Over brunch, we worked out that, it appeared, the estate agents advertisement, was indeed ‘affordable country living’ compared with our present rent in Devonport.

To cut a long story short, it was perfect, the view sold it to us, and the land gave us a picture of what it would like to be, and that was that we were home owners, with a chance to get away from city life, and our animals could run, bark, dig to their hearts content.
